The utensil drawer is probably the most difficult space in the kitchen to keep organised. There are so many objects of different shapes and sizes, that not only are they difficult to store together, it can make it almost impossible to find what you are looking for.
The most common solution to this dilemma is to install drawer dividers. Allowing the space to be divided assists with storing items by size, which works well for a while, but eventually with the entire family using this drawer, items are moved into random places and the frustration in finding items, especially small ones, returns. But there is another solution that I find works a treat.
Colour! For all of your popular everyday items, I recommend that you choose different colours for easy identification. My ‘red’ measuring cups may not be glamorous, but I can always find them. My ‘hot pink’ measuring spoons may be lying under other items, but I can always spot even just a hint of ‘hot pink’. ‘Bright yellow’ corn holders, although small, are incredibly easy to find.
Using colour won’t prevent this drawer from looking a little messy, but will certainly enhance its functionality and for me function trumps appearance every time. You don’t need to waste tidying a space if it functions well and for this space, colour is key.
So the next time you find yourself getting frustrated with finding items in your utensil drawer, think colour. By changing just a few items, it will make is so much easier to find what you are looking for, not only for you but the entire family.
